Types of Resumes
The following are four different types of sample resumes.
Each one offers a separate format and can be used as a guide for you when preparing your
own resume. Keep in mind that whatever style you choose your resume should communicate
your skills and abilities effectively. Some common resume styles are:
CHRONOLOGICAL
Perhaps the most popular resume format is CHRONOLOGICAL.
This resume allows you to present your work history and education in chronological order.
Information is listed in categories with headings for related work experience,
education/training, and any special skills, abilities, or achievements. This type of
format is best for entry-level applicants or professionals who want to highlight their
career progression.
FUNCTIONAL
A resume that focuses more on the skills youve
acquired than on the positions you have held are best expressed in a FUNCTIONAL resume
format. Information is listed in categories with headings for relevant skills,
capabilities, work history, and education/training. If you have extensive work experience,
are pursuing a position outside of your industry, or have gaps in your employment history,
this format is best suited for you.
COMBINATION
The COMBINATION resume format uses elements of more than
one resume format. Many resumes are written this way and it provides you with your own
unique style. The COMBINATION resume incorporates parts of the Chronological Resume with
parts of the Functional Resume. This type of format is best for those changing jobs. It is
most effective when skills and job experience need to be emphasized.
ELECTRONIC
With the internet and the increasing use of technology in
the transmission of data, the ELECTRONIC resume format is the newest style. This type of
format is the same as either the Chronological, Functional or Combination format, with a
much simpler appearance. All material is typed flush left with adequate spacing between
paragraphs. No symbols, bullets, underlining, bold lettering or graphics can be included.
