Welcome to this month's issue of Recruit2Hire TidBits!

If you think volunteer work for charitable organizations is 
just a hobby, guess again!  It could be the road to an 
exciting new career for you.

Well, this is our last issue for 2002 - next year will be 
even bigger and better!  Watch your email for an announce-
ment of a new service that will be available to employers 
and hiring managers soon!

2. Give your resume a shot of Volunteer "steroids"
__________________________________________________________

Unemployed?  Keep your resume fresh with volunteer work!

According to an article in The Washington Times, the
length of time it takes to find a new job is at its
highest in eight years.

Many resumes have a large gap between last date worked
and today's date.  It is not unusual for a job seeker
to have been out of work for 8 months or more!

Networking groups abound, but what are you actually
getting from them?  Who are the other participants
that you are meeting?  Chances are that you are meeting
others who are looking for work, just as you are.  It's
the nature of the game that their first concern is
going to be finding new work for themselves.  That's
not the best use of your time when you are looking
for a new job for yourself!

Volunteering is not just to keep yourself busy while
you're out of work.  It can further your career by
allowing you to learn new skills.

Volunteer for something related to what your career
is or will be:
Director of Marketing for a non-profit?
PR person - charitable organizations need help getting
their group into the news.
Sales person as fund raiser? as membership drive person?
List your accomplishments on your resume under work
experience.

Many non-profit paid jobs require previous experience
in the non-profit sector, but volunteers need no
previous experience there.

Choose an organization that does work close to your
heart.  Are you concerned with the issue of uninsured
families? Worried about the fate of animals in local
animal shelters?  Volunteer to work with those agencies
that address those issues!

The Volunteer Center of Alameda County for over 100
groups looking for volunteers:


Where else could you rub elbows with the CEO of a
major-league ball team; the President of a lumber
company?  These people and more are on the Board
of Directors for Southwest Leadership Foundation

Non-profit Board members come from the private sector -
who knows if the CEO of your most desired company
might be on the Board of the non-profit you choose
to volunteer for?  How much more likely is it that
they will notice someone who has the same passion
for that cause as they do?

Do your research:
Choose a cause.
Check the Board of Directors.
Find out what the needs of the organization are.
Volunteer!

Then get out and be visible with the organization;
go to their events; network!

Volunteering not only gives you a more positive
outlook (networking groups of other unemployed
people often focus on the negatives of being out
of work), it keeps your work skills fresh - like
giving your resume a shot of "Volunteer steroids".

Recruiting Tips from Recruit, Inspire & Retain

Develop A Marketing Plan to Recruit Employees

Your company can grow and prosper with the right employees
without spending a ton on recruiting costs. To do this,
you'll need a Recruitment Plan -- just like a marketing
plan--but this is marketing to potential employees!
The first step in developing and using a Recruitment Plan
is to target your market (applicants). Ask and record the
answers (involve as many of your current employees as
possible to get the best results) to the following
questions:

  * What are our company/department objectives for the
year? This is your mission statement or a paraphrase of
it.

  * What makes us attractive to potential employees? Ask
your employees the following questions to stimulate the
  discussion: "Why would someone want to work here?"
"Why did you come to work here?" "Why do you stay?"

  * Who are our potential employees? Based on all you
now know about the employees you need-- are they new
to the workforce, retired, students, veterans, people
with disabilities, teachers, salespeople, accountants?
Think about what walks of life your successful employees
have come from.

  Once you identify who your potential employees are, ask:
"Where would we find them?"

  * What do the employees we need value and need? Ask your
current employees what's important to them about their
position and what is important to them about working for
your company. It's likely to be the same things that'll
be important to the employees you're seeking to hire.

  * What are 10 benefits to them of working with us? When
your employees talk about "work" with potential employees,
they should have an inventory of things to discuss beyond
  whether they like it or not.

  * Who is our competition for the kind of employees we
need? You have competition from companies who have
proactive employee recruiting programs. Because everyone
should be involved in recruiting new employees, all of
your existing employees should know who the competition
is and what they do well to attract employees. Learn
from your competition.

REMEMBER: to grow your company and be successful,
you need to seek the employees you need all the time,
not just when you have an opening!
